Red Hook & the ferries · East End
Close enough to St. John to go for the day, whenever you feel like it
Red Hook is under a mile away: the car and passenger ferry to St. John and the BVI, the supermarket, and most of the East End's restaurants and nightlife.
📍 6720 Estate Smith Bay, Unit D101, St. Thomas, VI 00802, U.S. Virgin Islands
Unit D101 is on the East End of St. Thomas, under a mile from Red Hook — the town where the car and passenger ferries to St. John and the British Virgin Islands depart. That is roughly a five-minute drive or a short taxi, which makes a day on St. John an easy decision rather than a planned expedition.
Red Hook also has the supermarket you will want on arrival day, plus a concentration of restaurants, bars and the East End's nightlife. Closer still, the resort itself has a beach bar and grill on the sand, and there is another restaurant and bar a five-minute walk above the marina.

St. Thomas or St. John?
Sleep on St. Thomas, spend the day on St. John
St. John is mostly national park and it is beautiful, but it is also smaller, quieter and more expensive to stay on, with fewer groceries and a longer trip from the airport. St. Thomas has the airport, the supermarkets, the duty-free shopping in Charlotte Amalie — and, at Sapphire Beach, a beach that holds its own against anything across the water.
Staying on the East End gets you both. Cyril E. King Airport is 28 minutes away. Red Hook and the ferry are under a mile. You can be on Trunk Bay or Cinnamon Bay by mid-morning and back on your own patio for sunset, without paying St. John prices for a week.
Beach-hopping the East End is just as easy: Lindquist Beach is an 18-minute walk, and the other East End beaches are two to ten minutes apart by car. A rental car is handy but not necessary — there are taxis on site, and cars drive on the left here, which is worth knowing before you pick up keys.

Frequently asked
Questions about this condo
How far is the St. John ferry?
The car and passenger ferry dock is in Red Hook, under a mile from the condo — roughly a five-minute drive or a short taxi ride.
Should I stay on St. Thomas or St. John?
St. John is quieter and mostly national park, but smaller, pricier to stay on and further from the airport. St. Thomas has the airport, groceries and shopping, and Sapphire Beach is a top-rated beach in its own right. Staying on the East End puts St. John within a day trip.
How far is the airport?
Cyril E. King Airport (STT) is about a 28-minute drive.
Do I need a rental car?
Not necessarily. Taxis serve the resort and Red Hook is close. A car makes beach-hopping the East End easier — note that traffic drives on the left in the USVI. A free parking permit is available from the resort office.
Where is the nearest supermarket?
Red Hook, under a mile away, has groceries along with restaurants and bars.
Is there anywhere to eat without leaving the resort?
Yes — a bar and grill on the property serving burgers, hot dogs and Caribbean drinks, plus a beach bar near the dive shop with live music on Sundays. Another restaurant and bar is a five-minute walk above the marina, and pizza delivers to the condo.
Can I get to the British Virgin Islands?
Yes. Ferries to the BVI run from Red Hook, and the marina books catamaran and speedboat trips to Jost Van Dyke and Virgin Gorda. A passport is required for the BVI even though the USVI are U.S. territory.
