Coral World and Coki Beach are five minutes from the patio
Two very different things share one headland: a marine park built around an underwater observatory, and a small reef beach that gets busy at exactly the wrong hours. Both are a short drive west of the condo.

Coral World Ocean Park and Coki Beach are both on Coki Point, roughly five minutes by car west of Sapphire Beach Resort. Coral World is a marine park: an underwater observatory that puts you below the waterline on a natural reef, plus shark, turtle, stingray and sea-lion exhibits and a short nature trail. Coki Beach is the public beach immediately below it, small and fringed with reef, and one of the easiest shore-entry snorkels on St. Thomas.
The single piece of advice that matters is timing. Coki is a standard cruise-ship excursion, so it fills from mid-morning to early afternoon on ship days and empties again after. Go before about ten in the morning and it is a different beach. Coral World publishes its hours and prices on its own site and closes for maintenance on some dates in early autumn, so check before you drive over.

What Coral World actually is
Coral World is built around an underwater observatory — a tower sunk into a natural reef, with windows below the waterline, so you see the reef without getting wet. That is the part children remember and the part that works on a rainy afternoon.
Around it are shark, turtle and stingray pools, a Caribbean reef tank, a touch pool, a sea-lion exhibit and a short nature trail across the headland. There are paid encounters — swimming with sea lions, a helmet dive that walks you along the sea floor — that book separately and fill up in season.
It is a compact park; most guests spend two to three hours. Admission, hours and the encounter bookings are all on coralworldvi.com, and the park closes for maintenance on some dates in September and October, which is worth checking rather than discovering at the gate.

Coki Beach, and when to go
Coki is small, sheltered and ringed by reef close enough to shore that you walk in with a mask and you are over fish in a minute. That accessibility is why it is on every cruise excursion list, and why the same qualities that make it good make it crowded.
On a ship day, expect vendors, music and a full beach from mid-morning to early afternoon. Before ten, it is calm and the visibility is usually at its best. After about three, the day-trippers have gone back to the dock.
You do not have to go at all, and that is worth saying plainly: Sapphire Beach has its own reef off the coral-beach side, and the condo keeps three sets of snorkel gear. Coki is a different reef with different fish, not a better one. Go for the variety, not because you are missing out.

Getting there
Three ways to cover five minutes
By car it is a short run west along the main East End road, with parking at both. By taxi it is a short hop — taxis on St. Thomas charge a fixed rate per person by destination rather than by the meter, so agree the fare before you get in.
The open-air safari buses that run the East End also pass this way. They are flag-down, cash, and have no timetable; the eastbound leg passes the beaches, while the return leg often takes the inland highway, so do not count on catching one back the same way you came.
Frequently asked
Questions about coral world & coki
How far is Coral World from Sapphire Beach Resort?
About five minutes by car. Coral World sits on Coki Point, the next headland west of Sapphire Beach on the East End of St. Thomas.
Is Coki Beach good for snorkeling?
Yes — the reef is close to shore and you walk in from the sand, which makes it one of the easiest shore snorkels on the island. Visibility is usually best early in the morning.
When is Coki Beach least crowded?
Before about ten in the morning, and after about three in the afternoon. It is a cruise-ship excursion beach, so the middle of the day on a ship day is the busiest it gets.
Do I need to go to Coki if I am staying on Sapphire Beach?
No. Sapphire Beach has its own reef on the coral-beach side and the condo keeps three sets of snorkel gear, so you can snorkel without going anywhere. Coki is a different reef, not a better one.
Can I walk to Coral World from the condo?
It is not a sensible walk — the road between the two headlands is narrow with no footpath. Take a car, a taxi or a safari bus for the five-minute trip.
What does Coral World cost and when is it open?
Prices and hours change, and the park closes for maintenance on some dates in early autumn, so check coralworldvi.com before you go rather than relying on a figure printed on someone else's website.
